There’s a lot going on today, and it will be a bit odd for the next day for me, as I settle in to a short-term gig dog-and-house-sitting for the next week. I hope to have full internet access during that time, and to be updating at least daily, so that I can knock down the list of the things I’ve got going to post about…There won’t be time for one of those today, but there is time for two odd things I saw else-internet today.

No, that isn’t an ancient glazed donut. It appears that some Roman glass beads, like this one, have been found…in fifth-century CE Japanese tombs! I’ve long heard about various direct and indirect Indo-European cultural influences on Japan, and now there’s some archaeological evidence for there having been contact, even if only through long-distance trade. Who knows?

And, in semi-local news, forget the shambling bands of marauding zombies eating people; fear, instead, roving bands of belligerent leprechauns in Seattle! I wonder if the assault victim in this case was confused, and they were simply Irish people, but in his drunken state, he couldn’t remember “Irish” and instead said “leprechaun.” Hmm…
So, there we are for today. Happy June 23rd, all!
