Poem: “The Dark Night Is Over”

The Dark Night Is Over

The Dark Night is over.

Not because the eve and morn
will see the shortest night of the year.
The day’s lengths will wax and wane in time
but no more will night’s black be a burden to you.

The Dark Night is over.

No more will you look to starlight
to provide small lanterns of brightness
in the heart of the black at the end of day;
now you are a child of the black spaces, and of Night herself.

The Dark Night is over.

No more will the color of evening,
whether black or blue, or lit by flashes
of the Aurora Borealis of any color, or the moon,
be cause for fear and apprehension, or the scourge of loneliness.

The Dark Night is over.

Not because there will be no more
nights, or darkness, of lengths short and great,
or fear, or loneliness, or sadness, or desolation–
only because you now know that I am never far away from you.

The Dark Night is over.
